There were lots of what they call “takeaways” in the speech. That’s the way that crack speechwriters craft them and the way crack correspondents report them. Most of those lines just roll over the rest of us. But there was one, last night, that jumped out at you. As Government Executive reports, at one point the president said:
One wonders just how many millions of Americans would settle for that. And appreciate being informed when Washington gets there.
This, by the way, in the same speech where the president devoted one of his tiresome brags to the matter of how well his administration managing the … Veterans Affairs.
One also wonders just how many veterans would have felt blessed to be caught up in a bureaucracy that didn’t “screw things up.”
Before raising the bar, Washington, the administration, and government should work on clearing the low one of routine competence and honesty.
