Metro announces weekend track work, delays

Weed whacking, platform repairs and a host of other track rehabilitation and maintenance projects are expected to hobble train movement and prolong commutes for thousands of Metro passengers on the Red, Blue, Yellow and Green lines this weekend.

Metro officials on Thursday announced planned delays of between 20 and 30 minutes for many weekend riders.

The delays will begin Friday night at 10 p.m. for Red Line passengers, and will continue throughout the weekend. Blue and Yellow line delays will stretch from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, while Green Line riders will experience slowdowns on Sunday only, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“We have extensive work to do all over the system, and this is important work that needs to get done,” said Metro spokeswoman Cathy Asato.

Crews are scheduled to repair a deteriorating platform at the Rockville station on the Red Line, and will perform maintenance work on a section of elevated track near the Rhode Island Ave.-Brentwood station farther south. Those projects will force single-tracking intermittently along the Red Line.

Track replacement work is expected to put Blue and Yellow Line trains onto a single track between the Pentagon City and Braddock Road stations. And weed trimming on the Green Line between the College Park and Greenbelt stations will result in similar delays.
