LANCASTER, Calif. (AP) — An hours-long standoff between an armed man and Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies in the high-desert city of Lancaster has ended with an arrest.

The Sheriff’s Department says the man pointed a rifle at deputies serving a court-ordered eviction notice Tuesday morning.

Deputies retreated while a SWAT team was summoned. A child-care site across the street was evacuated and children were sent home from a nearby school.

Authorities say that despite several hours of attempts to arrange a peaceful surrender, the suspect fired several rounds at deputies.

The man finally surrendered after deputies used tear gas Tuesday evening.

A Sheriff’s Department statement says the man was taken to a hospital for treatment of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his jaw. The wound was described as not life-threatening.
