Although the majority of Republicans decided to skip out on attending the first anniversary of the Jan. 6 Capitol attack, one prominent member of the GOP made a surprise appearance on Capitol Hill.
Former Vice President Dick Cheney was in attendance for posterity, he said.
“It’s an important historical event,” according to the former vice president. “You can’t overestimate how important it is.”

The father of Rep. Liz Cheney, a Wyoming Republican, also took the opportunity to criticize the contemporary leadership of the GOP.
“I’m deeply disappointed we don’t have better leadership in the Republican Party to restore the Constitution,” he said.
He also didn’t pull any punches when describing current GOP leaders and how they handled events such as Thursday’s anniversary.
“Well, it’s not a leadership that resembles any of the folks that I knew when I was here for 10 years — dramatically,” he added.
One exception is his daughter, the former vice president said, noting he is “very proud of Liz.”
She has been the victim of heavy criticism from her party regarding her position as vice president of the House Select Committee on the Jan. 6 Attack.
It’s “very concerning,” Liz Cheney said. “I think a party that is in thrall to a cult personality is a party that is dangerous to the country, and I think we clearly have got to get to a place we are we are focused on substance and on issues.”
The congresswoman now fills the seat her father once held, and the elder Cheney accompanied his daughter to the House floor to honor a moment of silence, according to a report. The former vice president has lifetime floor privilege.
While on the floor, Democratic members, many of whom were harsh critics of the former vice president, approached the elder Cheney to shake his hand and pay their respects, according to the report.
Aside from the Cheneys, no other Republicans were in attendance, the report noted.
“It’s great coming back,” the former vice president said. “Liz is doing a hell of a job. I’m here to support her.”

While at the Capitol, the elder Cheney walked through the halls and stopped to observe a bust of himself outside Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell’s office, the report stated.
