Hillary Clinton has a message for those who think her election is in the bag: Donald Trump’s “not stupid!”
It’s not meant to be a compliment by a stretch. It’s meant to rally donations to counter the media feeding frenzy surrounding Trump and the “free” 24-hour coverage it affords the GOP’s boisterous presumptive nominee.
“Trump may be a thin-skinned bully who goes through life in a moral vacuum, but he’s not stupid,” Clinton campaign manager Robby Mook said in a message to supporters on Sunday. He’s “using his 24/7 media coverage to attack Hillary and this team, all day every day, for free.”
Mook said the campaign’s funding projections are six percent behind where they should be as of June 19. His biggest “fear” is that people think the election is in the bag, “and we’re going to beat Donald Trump no problem.”
Mook says that is precisely the kind of thinking that will lose Clinton the election in November.
“If we want to beat him, we need to work as hard at bringing people together as he does at tearing us apart,” Mook says. “Every time you chip in $1, you help us open new field offices, hire more organizers, and do the real work it’s going to take to beat Trump.”
