Paul Krugman: Trump ‘isn’t a real American’

Liberal economist and New York Times columnist Paul Krugman said President Trump’s reaction to the violence in Charlottesville, Va., shows that he’s un-American.

“For Donald Trump’s refusal to condemn the murderous white supremacists in Charlottesville finally confirms what has become increasingly obvious: The current president of the United States isn’t a real American,” he wrote in an op-ed published Monday.

A woman was killed and several others were injured during a rally Saturday by white supremacists, after a driver plowed into a group of people protesting the gathering.

Trump expressed condolences for those injured and condemned the “egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides,” but critics said his statement didn’t go far enough in specifically addressing white nationalists groups.

“In short,” Krugman wrote, “these days we have a president who is really, truly, deeply un-American, someone who doesn’t share the values and ideals that made this country special.”
