House Freedom Caucus wants to cancel August recess

The House Freedom Caucus is urging House leadership to cancel the upcoming August recess.

The three-dozen or so members of the conservative group want to continue working to “accomplish the priorities of the American people,” according to a statement late Tuesday.

The group also shared its mission statement in the brief post: “The House Freedom Caucus gives a voice to countless Americans who feel that Washington does not represent them. We support open, accountable and limited government, the Constitution and the rule of law, and policies that promote the liberty, safety, and prosperity of all Americans.”

The HFC didn’t share what exactly they want to work on instead of allowing lawmakers to take the customary August recess, but tax reform is a high-priority agenda item for congressional Republicans.

The House also recently passed a bill to repeal and replace Obamacare, which is now in the hands of the Senate. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Tuesday that his chamber will vote on a healthcare bill “in the near future.”
