60 Minutes spin: Truth and consequences

CBS News’s 60 Minutes program is coming under intense fire for its Sunday night segment that accused Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis of “pay for play.”

The piece by correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi uses what critics call an extreme case of deceptive editing, leaving out the governor’s detailed and nuanced explanation for granting the grocery store chain Publix the right to provide COVID-19 vaccines after he received a contribution for his reelection campaign from Publix.

The piece omitted that the decision was made by the state health authorities and that drug chains, including CVS, Walgreens, and Walmart, also had been granted the same status as Publix to be vaccine sites.

It also implied that residents of the heavily African American town of Belle Glade, Florida, were deprived of vaccines because the nearest Publix was 25 miles away while omitting that two CVS stores in the town were providing vaccines.
