Bowser drops plans for 15 mph speed limits in D.C.

D.C. Council member Muriel Bowser on Thursday dropped her proposal to drop residential speed limits in the District to 15 miles per hour, down from the current 25 mph.

“My constituents asked me to take a step back and I listened. But, there still needs to be more done to advance pedestrian safety,” Bowser said.

Browser’s bill, introduced Nov. 1, would have affected only residential areas and was intended to keep bikers and walkers safe.

Instead of pursuing the new speed limit bill, Bowser and council member Tommy Wells announced they have expanded a pedestrian safety pilot program to include Wards 4 and 6. The program will run eight months and include a study of speeding on some residential streets.
