MIAMI (AP) — A group of high school students from around the country are taking part in a mock outbreak of an infectious disease in Miami.
The 50 students will visit Florida International University’s Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine on Friday. A school statement says the students will find themselves in the midst of a mock outbreak of a highly infectious disease. This exercise simulates the process doctors go through to solve a medical mystery and reach a diagnosis.
Teams will gather clues to the outbreak by rotating through several stations where they will interview a patient, experience a simulated medical emergency, review autopsy results, go over x-rays and lab results. They’ll then present their findings and recommendations.
The students are participating in a national summer program.
