Volunteers are being recruited by the Friends of the National Zoo to serve as exhibit interpreters for the new Asia Trail exhibit, opening Sept. 20, and the current tropical hot-spot, Amazonia.

Interpreters on the Asia Trail will bring some of the zoo’s nearly 3 million annual visitors through exhibits showcasing species native to Asia.

For those who love the PandaCam and the tropical appeal of Amazonia but aren’t sure they’re ready to guide guests, zoo spokesman Matt Olear says not to worry. Interested citizens “don’t have to have any sort of background in animals,” he explained.

Those interested may begin the process by filling out an application form at the zoo’s Web site. Olear estimates 1,500 to 1,800 people volunteer at the zoo annually. Interpreters work a flexible schedule of three, three-hour shifts a month and attend monthly meetings.

Applicants for the Asia Trail must apply by July 21. Those hoping to volunteer in Amazonia must file by July 31.
