Government, schools aim for ‘culturally sensitive’ holidays

When it comes to the holidays, Washington-area officials, including those with the federal government, tread lightly around the Christmas tree.

“I think we try to be culturally sensitive. I think we try to say ‘Happy Holidays,’ ” said Arlington County spokeswoman Diana Sun. “We do really encourage people to have awareness.”

Government and school offices across the Washington metropolitan have taken steps to avoid offending anyone with a greeting that mentions only one holiday in a season that includes Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and the winter solstice.
