Who: Al Sharpton, host of “PoliticsNation” on MSNBC What: In his opening monologue Tuesday night, Sharpton described Republican presidential candidates Michele Bachmann, Rick Perry and Mitt Romney as “those who want to bring this country back to the pre-1960s, where people did not have the protection of a national government that would make sure they could not be ruined or ruled by those that had regional biases.”
Why it’s dim: Sharpton, who based his claim on the GOP candidates’ praise of the 10th Amendment, was insinuating that these candidates want to go back to lynchings and Jim Crow just because they don’t want to be under the federal government’s thumb.
Cure: Stop denigrating the Bill of Rights in an effort to rile up Democratic supporters.
