The last primary before November’s midterm elections also features the final showdown between a leading Democratic incumbent and a progressive challenger. The New York primary is highlighted by the clash between Gov. Andrew Cuomo, son of the late former governor, and actress Cynthia Nixon.
Zephyr Teachout, Cuomo’s 2014 challenger, is locked in a four-way race for the Democratic nomination for attorney general, a race that has taken on a national profile because past officeholders have used the position to take on President Trump. Sean Patrick Maloney, Letitia James, and Leecia Eve round out the field.
The Democratic primary for New York’s 19th State Senate District has also captured national attention. Incumbent Martin Dilan is facing progressive primary challenger Julia Salazar, a socialist in the mold of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Salazar has drawn criticism for misstating details about her personal background.
