Massachusetts voters head to the polls Tuesday to cast primary ballots for governor. Gov. Charlie Baker is facing a Republican primary challenge from Scott Lively. The Democrats’ choices are Jay Gonalez and Bob Massie. Despite the state’s strong Democratic tilt, Baker is one of the most popular governors in the country.
State Rep. Geoff Diehl, businessman John Kingston, and Beth Lindstrom are vying for the chance to become the Republican challenger to Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a leading national Democratic figure who is talked about as a possible 2020 presidential candidate.
Civil rights attorney Tahirah Amatul-Wadud, a Muslim and progressive, is challenging longtime Rep. Richard Neal in the Democratic primary in Massachusetts’ 1st Congressional District. Neal is the ranking Democrat on the House Ways and Means Committee and a former mayor of Springfield, the district’s largest city.
Ten Democrats are running Rep. Nikki Tsongas in Massachusetts’ 3rd District. Only one Republican is the in the race. The candidates include a former chief of staff to Boston Mayor Marty Walsh, a former chief of staff to longtime Rep. Marty Meehan, a state senator and a former ambassador to Denmark.
In the 7th District, Boston City Councilor Ayanna Pressley is challenging Rep. Michael Capuano from the Left. Sens. Warren and Ed Markey have stayed neutral in the race.
Rep. Stephen Lynch is also competing with a progressive primary challenger in the 8th District. Lynch’s opponent is video game developer Brianna Wu.
