Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, said Wednesday that he’s sure President Trump has lied before, but said Republicans nonetheless need to come together to work with him to advance the GOP’s agenda.
“I’m certain that he has,” Lee said on MSNBC when asked if Trump lies or has ever lied. “But my purpose to come here today, it is not to focus on those things.”
“My purpose is to call on my colleagues, whether they’re Republicans or Democrats, to get behind the agenda of trying to reform the government and make it work for the people, rather than the other way around,” he said.
When pressed on how Republicans should handle Trump’s attacks against Sens. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., and Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., Lee agreed those fights shouldn’t happen, but said only that those involved need to sort it out.
“If we were all to chase every squirrel that comes running along in the form of a personal dispute or a mischaracterization of someone, or someone’s integrity or intent, we’d be very busy doing that and not focusing on the government, on that which we need to reform internally,” he said.
