John Berthoud, RIP

John was found yesterday by a couple of his colleagues from the National Taxpayers Union. Apparently he passed away Wednesday evening while working at his laptop after attending a movie premier. To say there is shock today in the conservative activist and policy community is an understatement because so many people knew and respected John.

I’ve known John for many years and respected him as among the most prescient and devoted leaders in the conservative movement. John headed the National Taxpayers Union and its foundation for more than a decade and was building a powerhouse of sharp analysts, excellent researchers, effective marketing and communications programs and , perhaps most important, a widely diffused network at all levels of people committed to the good fight to preserve individual freedom.

His passing is a tremendous loss for the cause of freedom, his many friends and admirers and his family.  Here is NTU’s announcement. The Washington Times obit is here. The Heritage Foundation’s Ed Feulner’s statement is here. Statement from American Legislative Exchange Council here.
