US Consulate to evacuate staff from coronavirus-infected Wuhan

The U.S. Consulate in the Chinese city of Wuhan will evacuate personnel and private U.S. citizens on a private flight on Tuesday.

The U.S. Embassy in Beijing issued a notice Sunday that said there would be limited capacity for U.S. citizens on the flight that would fly directly to San Francisco.

“This capacity is extremely limited and if there is insufficient ability to transport everyone who expresses interest, priority will be given to individuals at greater risk from coronavirus,” the embassy said.

Private citizens are expected to repay the travel costs, the notice said.

Wuhan has been at the center of the deadly coronavirus outbreak in China. The death toll from the mystery virus has climbed to at least 80 people, and nearly 3,000 people have contracted the disease as of Monday.

At least five cases have been reported in the United States, though there have been no deaths from the virus reported outside of China.
