Several people were shot at a large protest Thursday evening in downtown Louisville, Kentucky, as people gathered to demand justice in the shooting death of Breonna Taylor.
Police said seven people were shot around 11:30 p.m. local time and that one was in “critical” condition. Police said there were “some arrests” but did not provide a number.
“It is unclear at this time whether or not we will be able to provide additional updates this evening,” said a spokesperson for the Louisville Metro Police Department, according to WDRB.
Video circulating on Twitter shows hundreds of people standing on Jefferson Street near Metro Hall, including some who appeared to be trying to overturn a prisoner transport vehicle, before gunfire erupted.
“The crowd ran,” WFPL reporter Ryan Van Velzer said. “The police quickly ran up. They immediately started helping the people on the ground, and then, police set up a barrier. It looked like at least one man was shot in the abdomen. I saw blood. It was definitely a shooting.”

Taylor, a 26-year-old EMT worker, was shot and killed in March after officers forced their way inside her apartment while executing a search warrant in a narcotics investigation. No drugs were found in her home.
Taylor’s family sued the Louisville Police Department earlier this month.
Hundreds of protesters gathered in downtown Louisville Thursday evening, chanting, “No justice, no peace.”
The protest began hours after Mayor Greg Fischer held a town hall discussion about the case and community-police relations.
