BALTIMORE (AP) — A beating victim believes a Maryland cannibalism suspect had planned to eat his organs, too, when he attacked him with a baseball bat.

An attorney for Joshua Ceasar says when his client regained consciousness after the initial attack May 19 at a Morgan State University dormitory apartment, he saw 21-year-old Alex Kinyua standing over him with a knife. Days later, police say Kinyua told investigators that he ate the heart and brain of a family friend he is charged with killing.

Attorney Steve Silverman said Tuesday that Kinyua’s roommates followed a blood trail and interrupted Kinyua before he could use the knife. Kinyua is charged in the bat attack. Silverman says he is investigating signs that Kinyua was a danger to the community.

Kinyua’s attorney could not be reached for comment.
