Trump rips Cruz over Twitter

Donald Trump criticized Ted Cruz’s convention speech for not going far enough toward supporting his candidacy, just hours after Cruz drew boos at the convention for not explicitly endorsing Trump.

“Ted Cruz talks about the Constitution but doesn’t say that if the Dems win the Presidency, the new JUSTICES appointed will destroy us all!” Trump said in a tweet early Thursday morning.

Cruz used his convention speech to say the U.S. must return to freedom and following the Constitution. “Freedom means Supreme Court Justices who don’t dictate policy, but instead follow the Constitution,” he said.

But Cruz also declined to endorse the GOP presidential nominee, drawing jeers and complaints from Trump supporters who noted that Cruz went back on his pledge to support the Republican nominee. Many Trump supporters say that Cruz’s failure to endorse Trump effectively makes it easier for Hillary Clinton to win the White House, which would mean an entirely different standard for choosing a Supreme Court justice.

Trump explained the booing in a tweet late Wednesday night.

“Wow, Ted Cruz got booed off the stage, didn’t honor the pledge! I saw his speech two hours early but let him speak anyway. No big deal!” he wrote on Twitter shortly before midnight.
