A 10-year-old girl in Orlando was charged with murder on Wednesday after allegedly shooting a woman who was arguing with her mother last week.
The child has been taken into custody at a juvenile justice center and charged with second-degree murder, according to the Orlando Police Department.
Officials initially were unsure how to proceed, given the suspect’s age. But the girl “showed no remorse or care for the injury sustained by Rodgers,” an affidavit obtained by the Washington Post said. The girl’s name was also not released because of her age.
PHILADELPHIA SHOOTING VICTIMS IDENTIFIED
Florida Ninth Judicial Circuit State Attorney Monique Worrell said the case was one of the most tragic cases she has ever seen.
“This shooting is an unimaginable tragedy that defies easy solutions,” Worrell said on Tuesday. “Our office will proceed with care, and our primary focus will be on doing whatever we can to support Ms. Rodgers’s family, protect the public, and improve the health of this child going forward.”
The shooting took place in the courtyard of the duo’s apartment complex during a Memorial Day barbecue after Lashun Rodgers began arguing with the girl’s mother, Lakrisha Isaac, over a social media post, the arrest affidavit said. The argument got physical after Isaac threw the first punch, and at one point in the fight, Isaac handed her purse, which had a pistol inside, to her daughter, the affidavit added. The girl then picked up the gun and shot the woman twice, hitting her head, officials said.

Rodgers was taken to the hospital, where she died from her injuries shortly after midnight in late May, officers said.
Isaac, who was also arrested, has been charged with manslaughter by culpable negligence, child neglect, negligent storage of a firearm, and aggravated assault with a firearm, according to the Associated Press.
