Radio host walks off show after being told he can’t criticize Demi Lovato’s nonbinary announcement

A Boston radio host walked off of his show Wednesday after being told he couldn’t criticize actress Demi Lovato.

“I am the biggest of all time, and they said shut up, Matt. Stop talking. Well, I hope you’re happy ‘cuz I just stopped talking. Matty out,” Matt Siegel, host of Matty in the Morning on Boston’s Kiss 108, said before walking out of the studio, according to CBS Boston.

Siegel, who has been on the radio since 1981, didn’t return for the remaining 45 minutes of his show, leading some fans to speculate he had quit the show.

Siegel later told Boston.com that he plans to return to the show, but he stands by his opposition to Lovato’s recent announcement that the singer is “nonbinary” and wants to be referred to as “they/them.”

“I’m against her binary thing; I think she’s a troubled woman, and a lot of young people are taking her seriously, and it bothers me,” Siegel said. “But of course, it’s a comedy show, so I did it in the context of jokes.”

The longtime radio host explained that he doesn’t want to be on the radio if he’s not allowed to say what he thinks.

“We were having fun with it, and my boss called up and said that I’d crossed the line, and they didn’t want me talking about it anymore,” he said. “I responded by saying, ‘If I can’t talk about what I’m thinking at this point in my career, I don’t want to be on the radio anymore.’”

Siegel said there are no hard feelings between him and his boss, saying the company “made it clear” they don’t want him to leave.

“There’s no ill-feeling between me and my boss or me and my company, none.” the radio host said. “They’re doing their jobs. I get it. They got a lot of heat this morning, people complaining about things I said on the air. He doesn’t want me to be fired. His heart was in the right place.”

Despite the lack of hard feelings, Siegel has made it clear he’s still upset about the situation.

“At some point, I hate to use this line, but you know the line from ‘Billions’ — ‘What’s the point of having f*** you money if you never say f*** you?’’” Siegel said. “If I don’t say it now, when? When I’m dead?”

Siegel said he also received pushback from his superiors when he talked about former president Donald Trump in the past.

“I did a whole thing talking about Trump, and then I got heat on that — ‘Half our listeners are Republicans, what are you doing, you’re gonna lose all our male listeners’ — so I stopped,” Siegel said. “So I stopped talking about Trump, and today I’m ‘anti-woke.’ You know the expression, ‘The guy standing in the middle of the road gets hit by cars going both ways?’ That’s what happened to me.”
