A tactical retreat

With a tactical game, you either need to be detached from your characters and let them fight the fight (“Advance Wars”) or follow their careers and their stories and care about how they develop (“Final Fantasy Tactics“).

Wild Arms XF” walks a middle road. Character class is reduced to an equippable item that needs to be changed to fit the battle, yet the characters’ story is a driving force of the game.

Missions are frustrating, often needing to be played over and over until the right mix of classes and tactics fit the specific needs of the level.

The music and voice acting are good, but the cut scenes are static and waste the potential of the PSP.

“XF” is more of a combat puzzle than a tactics game.
