A fire broke out Thursday morning at The Phillips Collection, closing the art haven until “further notice,” according to officials with the Dupont Circle museum.
The renovation-related fire started on the roof of the museum at 1600 21st St. NW, causing the automatic sprinkler system to go off at the four-story building. Around 50 firefighters responded to the scene at 8:30 a.m.
A statement from the museum reads: “The fire was contained and extinguished. No one was injured. All artwork is safe and secure. Museum conservators are currently evaluating the artwork but nothing has incurred significant damage. The building condition is being evaluated as well.”
