Some 91 percent of Americans want to help their communities, according to a national study by United Way Worldwide. Now’s your chance to prove it. During the fourth annual United Way Day of Action on Tuesday, United Way chapters nationwide, Target and the Annie E. Casey Foundation will begin a three-year effort to recruit one million new volunteer readers, tutors and mentors in education. As part of the effort to halve by 2018 the number of young people who drop out of high school, volunteers will gather on the National Mall between Third and Fourth streets Northwest to assemble 50,000 summer reading backpacks for elementary school children. ??- Natalie Plumb
