White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Monday he cannot confirm or deny rumors that Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas is considering stepping down.

“I have no insight into the future career plans of any justices,” Earnest said before criticizing congressional Republicans’ refusal to hold hearings on Judge Merrick Garland’s nomination to replace the late Justice Antonin Scalia.

Thomas’ wife immediately dismissed the reports as “bogus.”

When asked if Thomas and President Obama have ever met privately, Earnest answered: “Not that I can think of off the top of my head.”
