UTICA, N.Y. (AP) — The founder of an upstate New York medical equipment manufacturer has decided to retire from the board of directors and as an employee.

Eugene Corasanti’s decision at Conmed Corp. takes effect immediately. The company also announced Wednesday that Corasanti’s son, Joseph, is stepping down as president, chief executive officer, and board member.

The board of directors has appointed Curt Hartman, who has more than two decades of medical device industry experience, as interim CEO while a national search for a replacement is conducted.

The moves at the top shelved the possibility of a sale of the company, but Conmed’s stock plummeted more than 9 percent by the end of trading Wednesday.

Conmed was founded in 1970 and has 3,600 employees worldwide, including about 1,000 in upstate New York.
