Chocolate-covered cicadas are latest candy craze

Everything’s better dipped in chocolate — even pestilent insects that have been underground for 17 years.

A chocolate shop in Bethesda, Maryland, is joining the ever-growing list of places attempting to convince people to eat the Brood X cicadas. Chouquette Chocolates is using the emergence of the periodical cicadas as a marketing effort.

The store sells anything from dark chocolate peppermint truffles shaped like cicadas all the way to the real thing if customers are daring enough to try.

“Love them or hate them, Brood X is here … Cicada Summer 2021 Tour. Lean In to the invasion and Celebrate the 17 year cycle,” the company wrote.

One dozen of the chocolate-covered cicadas, given a “limited edition” label, costs a total of $22. Customers are asked to order three to five days in advance for the real bug treats.

The cicadas were gathered locally from Silver Spring, Gaithersburg, and Potomac, according to Chouquette.

Those who wish to try the cicada delicacy can choose between 72% dark chocolate or 38% milk chocolate versions.

The company even offers users on social media a tutorial for making the chocolate-covered bugs at home, in case some would prefer to hunt for their own buggy treats in the backyard.
