Memorial service Friday for soldier killed in Black Hawk crash

A memorial service will be held Friday for the soldier killed this week in a Black Hawk training flight in Maryland, the Army announced.

The chapel at Fort Belvoir in Virginia will host the service for Spc. Jeremy Darrell Tomlin, 22, of Chapel Hill, N.C., who was the crew chief for the UH-60 helicopter. He was assigned to the 12th Aviation Battalion.

Tomlin died at the scene when the helicopter crashed Monday afternoon on a golf course in Leonardtown.

Two other crew members were severely injured in the incident.

Chief Warrant Officer Christopher Nicholas, who was the pilot, and Capt. Terikazu Onoda, commander of the 12th Aviation Battalion’s Charlie Company, were in critical condition at the University of Maryland R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, according to the Army.

The cause of the training flight crash was still being investigated by a team from the Army Combat Readiness Center in Alabama, which arrived at the scene on Tuesday afternoon.
