Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi, John Lewis to speak at Louise Slaughter’s funeral

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and civil rights icon Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., will speak at the funeral for Rep. Louise Slaughter, D-N.Y., who died last week.

Slaughter’s office announced Wednesday the three will eulogize Slaughter at her funeral at the Eastman Theatre in Rochester on Friday.

“It is a source of comfort knowing how many people admired Louise and were impacted by her life’s work,” Liam Fitzsimmons, her chief of staff, said in a statement. “The service will be a fitting celebration of a truly remarkable person.”

Slaughter, 88, had been hospitalized following a fall at her Washington, D.C., home and was being treated for a concussion at George Washington University Hospital.

In 2007, Slaughter made history when she became the first woman to chair the House Rules Committee. She was the top Democrat on the committee at the time of her death.

Slaughter served in Congress for 31 years.
