Priebus expects secretary of state announcement in next 2 weeks

A top Trump transition official said Sunday he expects the incoming Republican president to reveal who he’s tapped for secretary of state in the next two weeks.

“You know, I’m not sure. Perhaps next week or the week after,” Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus told radio host John Catsimatidis when asked when President-elect Trump will name someone to the top diplomatic post. The Trump transition team told reporters last week that the president-elect had narrowed his search for secretary of state down to four individuals, including 2012 GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani. Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker and former CIA director Gen. David Petraeus are rumored to be the other two contenders for the coveted Cabinet-level position.

Priebus, who will be Trump’s chief of staff in the White House, said the president-elect has also been in talks with some Democrats about positions in his administration, though he would not confirm whether any offers have been made.

“Well, we’re not sure yet, certainly we’re talking to them,” he said, noting that Trump met with Democratic North Dakota Sen. Heidi Heitkamp last Friday.

He added, “If it turns out that a Democrat is the best fit for a particular role, then that person is going to get picked.”
