STORYLINE:

Clashes broke out on Sunday in Spartak, a village outside the main rebel-held city of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine, throwing the freshly forged cease-fire agreement between government and separatist forces into further doubt.

At least two houses blazed in the rural village of Spartak, which lies just north of Donetsk city, after being hit by fire apparently coming from government troops.

One fighter, who provided only the nom de guerre Khokhol, freely acknowledged that the ceasefire was not being respected by either side.

A local man, whose house had been struck by a shell, said rebels fired from a spot near his house, which appeared to have provoked the retaliatory attack which destroyed his house.

In the Ukrainian port city of Mariupol a civilian has been killed in shelling and large explosions were heard near the airport in Donetsk early Sunday.

Blasts from the area near the airport were powerful enough to be heard in downtown Donetsk, the main rebel-held city in eastern Ukraine.

The cease-fire had appeared to be holding for much of the day Saturday, but shelling started late at night.
