Something to wonder about

After 2000 years, the world once again has its seven wonders ? plus one.

Local children have visited some of these wonders, including the Great Wall of China, Roman Coliseum and Taj Mahal.

Yucong Shi, a sixth-grader at Dumbarton Middle School, once visited the Great Wall of China.

“It was tiring because there were so many steps and it was really hot, but it was worth the walk. The view was so pretty. At the higher areas, you could see mountains in the distance and other parts of the Great Wall,” she said.

More than 100 million cast ballots online or by phone for the New7Wonders project last week.

Marty Sikes, a recent graduate of Centennial High School, once visited the Roman Coliseum.

“My favorite part was the lowest level of the Coliseum, where they showed us the different cells where they caged the wild animals and held the captives,” he said.

Only one of the ancient wonders ? the Pyramids at Giza ? still remains. The rest fell victim to time, eaten up by sands or destroyed by conquerors.

After complaints from the Egyptian government, the Pyramids at Giza were granted automatic, honorary status as a new wonder in addition to the seven, according to the New7Wonders Web site.
