Gray has mixed messages on Nickles, Rhee

Democratic mayoral nominee Vince Gray isn’t shy about saying goodbye to D.C. Attorney General Peter Nickles.

“He can leave anytime he wants to,” Gray told WTOP’s Mark Plotkin and Mark Segraves in a radio interview Friday morning. “I called for him to be fired a month ago.”

Earlier this week, Nickles said he planned to announce his resignation at the end of the year.

Gray refused to announce any potential staff changes he would make as mayor before Nov. 2 general — including that of schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee.

“I don’t know if we’re even taking about a transition,” he said on the topic of Rhee’s staying on the job after Mayor Adrian Fenty leaves office. “ I think it’s important that she and I sit down and start the conversation.”

Wanting the “best possible leadership for our children,” Gray reached out to Rhee within 24 hours of his victory over Mayor Adrian Fenty in Tuesday’s primary election.

Gray said that so far he and Rhee have only exchanged voicemails, but that he has no doubt a “candid, frank conversation about the future, her future here in the city” would be coming soon.
