Gaithersburg teen missing since 2010

The search for a missing teenage girl has stretched from Maryland to the U.S.-Mexico border.

Talia Minero was 14 years old when she ran away from her Gaithersburg home in June 2010. Since then, she hasn’t been located and police and missing-persons organizations are still working to find her.

Talia left her home to go to school on June 10, 2010, but never made it to class, said Melinda Stevens, director of the missing children division of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Talia might be traveling with a male companion, authorities said. She was seen with a male friend in August 2010, according to Montgomery County police, but no sightings have been reported since then. Stevens said the companion is believed to have ties to Texas and Mexico, and the pair might have traveled there.

It’s also possible that Talia has remained in the D.C. area: She is known to spend time around Rockville, Takoma Park and Northern Virginia, police said.

Stevens said her organization has distributed Talia’s poster in the Washington region and along the Texas-Mexico border.

Talia had her cell phone with her, but has not been in touch with relatives or friends, Stevens said.

“There has been no contact with her,” she said.

Authorities say no foul play is suspected in Talia’s disappearance.

Talia would be 16 years old now. She is described as Hispanic, about 5 feet 5 inches tall and about 155 pounds, according to NCMEC. She has brown hair and brown eyes. Her nose and lip are pierced.

Anyone with information about her disappearance is asked to call NCMEC at 800-THE-LOST (843-5678) or Montgomery County police at 301-279-8000 or 240-773-5400.
