AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The suspect in a series of killings in Indiana has a criminal history in Texas, including a sexual assault conviction in 2009.
According to court documents, Darren Vann was sentenced to five years in prison for an attack on a woman at an Austin apartment in 2007.
The victim told police he raped her and attempted to strangle her before eventually letting her go in a 2007 attack.
Vann was initially charged with a first-degree felony, which carried a sentence of five to 99 years in prison. He was allowed to plead guilty to a second-degree felony with a range of two to 20 years.
Vann was sentenced to five years and given credit for just over a year he spent in jail awaiting trial.
