Two dead after 6.4 magnitude earthquake in California

Two people were reported dead as a result of a recent 6.4 magnitude earthquake in California.

The deaths were attributed to a “medical emergency” occurring around the time of the earthquake that shook the state early on Tuesday, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office told ABC10. The relation between the medical emergency and the earthquake is currently unknown, but the two deaths are the first to be attributed to the disaster. An additional 11 injuries were reported as well.

“2 people have died as a result of a medical emergency occurring during and/or just following the #earthquake according to Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, ABC10 has just learned. 11 people have been reported as injured,” ABC10 reporter Jaden Torres tweeted.


The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake hit 7.5 miles west-southwest of Ferndale in Humboldt County. In addition to the casualties, the disaster wreaked havoc upon the area’s infrastructure as well. Poweroutage.us reported that 67,777 Humboldt residents were left without power as of 4:30 P.M. EST on Tuesday, approximately two-thirds of the county’s population.

The damage was localized to Humboldt, with surrounding counties being unaffected by the power outages.
