NEW YORK (AP) — New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is defending the investigation that cleared a top aide of wrongdoing.
De Blasio said Monday that he fully supports Rachel Noerdlinger, the chief-of-staff to his wife.
Noerdlinger has come under recent scrutiny after it was revealed that her live-in boyfriend has an extensive criminal record and mocked police on social media.
A Department of Investigation probe concluded that Noerdlinger did not disclose during her background check that she lives with her boyfriend.
But it did not recommend any disciplinary action.
De Blasio declared the matter “case closed” and that Noerdlinger played a vital role in his administration.
His support for Noerdlinger, a former top aide to noted NYPD critic the Rev. Al Sharpton, has further strained his relations with the rank-and-file police unions.
