Nye introduces JFCOM bill

U.S. Rep. Glenn Nye, D-Va., who has spoken out against Defense Secretary Robert Gates’ proposal to shutter the Joint Forces Command in Norfolk, has introduced a bill on the matter.

Nye’s legislation would prevent Gates from closing or modifying the command until he submits a proposal with sufficient analysis, including a detailed plan of action.

“Since the Secretary made his announcement six weeks ago, no one has seen any sort of documentation or analysis validating the elimination of JFCOM,” Nye said. “Governor McDonnell, myself, and the rest of the Hampton Roads have been persistently asking for the Secretary to make his case, and our requests continue to be ignored. While I appreciate the Secretary’s efforts to budget more efficiently, decisions involving a critical military installation, thousands of jobs, and our national security demand proper discussion. This bill will provide the necessary transparency and clarification.”
