Kevin McCarthy: Trump ‘kept his promise’

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, one of the staunchest Trump allies in Congress, touted the president’s achievements at the Republican National Convention and said he must be reelected to block the socialist Democratic agenda.

“The choice before you could not be clearer,” the California Republican said, speaking from Washington, D.C., with the Capitol in the backdrop. “Forward in freedom or backward in socialism. Forward in prosperity, backward in poverty, forward in personal liberty or backwards in more government control.”

The GOP convention has sought to contrast President Trump’s accomplishments to the Democratic agenda, which includes support of a “Green New Deal,” raising taxes, expanding Obamacare, and other liberal wish-list items.

Trump is also fighting against poll numbers indicating the public is unhappy with his handling of the coronavirus and its subsequent economic downturn, although his approval rating has improved recently.

McCarthy has long enthusiastically allied himself with the president, unlike his predecessor, former Speaker Paul Ryan, a Wisconsin Republican who often distanced himself from Trump.

McCarthy said that Trump helped create one of the strongest economies ever in America prior to the pandemic. Along with Republicans, he will do it again, he said, while Democrats would hurt the nation.

“It’s our mission to renew the American dream, restore our way of life, and rebuild the greatest economy in the world,” McCarthy said. “The socialist Democrats have a different agenda. They will dismantle our institutions to fund our police and destroy our economy.”

McCarthy said the Trump administration is facilitating the development of a vaccine for the coronavirus “in record time” and putting forward a “Marshall Plan” for Main Street “to put hardworking taxpayers back on their feet.”

“So, as you cast your vote this November, remember this,” McCarthy said. “Four years ago, President Trump promised to be your voice. He kept that promise. But there’s still so much more to do.”
