More than 140 citizens are signed up to comment today on the proposed waterfront redevelopment plan for Alexandria.

The meeting, which started at 9:30 a.m., isn’t expected to finish until 4 or 5 p.m.

The city council is then expected to vote on the plan, which has been the subject of a fiery, years-long debate in the city. Opponents of the plan say the waterfront should have more green space and museums rather than the boutique hotels and development that the city is planning.

Former state senator and Alexandria resident Patsy Ticer opposed the plan at the meeting this morning, saying she thinks more studies need to be done on road and water traffic before the plan is adopted.

“It’s really going to be a terrible situation without more study,” she said. “I would say this is not ready for prime time.”
