Beverly Hills City Council issues vote of ‘no confidence’ for LA District Attorney George Gascon

The Beverly Hills City Council issued a vote of “no confidence” against Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon.

“Safety and security is job one,” said Mayor Lester Friedman. “By disregarding the actions of criminals, we are undermining the work of our women and men in law enforcement. The laws which DA Gascon is ignoring were democratically passed and need to be enforced.”

The council passed the resolution 3-2 on Tuesday. The resolution states Gascon’s policies of dismissing some misdemeanor charges and eliminating sentencing enhancements “contradict state laws” and “the legislative ballot initiative process to prevent and prosecute crime and protect the general public.”

Gascon took office in December and announced an array of changes under his leadership, including stopping the use of sentencing enhancements, ending the use of the death penalty in the county, and trying juveniles as adults.

“Our system of justice can’t continue to rely on policies that create more victims tomorrow simply because some victims want the maximum punishment imposed in their case today,” Gascon said in a statement.

“I also can’t ignore research showing these views are not shared by a majority of survivors of violent crime. Nonetheless, all survivors agree that they need more support, and that’s why I’m focused on expanding our ability to provide clinical and trauma informed care for victims.”

Beverly Hills’s vote comes after the Santa Clarita City Council voted unanimously to approve a vote of no confidence in Gascon last week.

“The only way to ensure nothing happens is to do nothing,” said Councilman Jason Gibbs of the vote. “This vote is something … to demonstrate the serious concerns we have within this community.”

The Los Angeles district attorney, who was one of the many district attorney candidates funded by liberal billionaire George Soros across the country, has come under fire in recent weeks for his leadership, which sparked a recall effort.

Families in Los Angeles have also gone public voicing their concerns that Gascon is “in the wrong office.”

“He’d be a great public defender,” Desiree Andrade, whose son Julien was killed in California in 2018, said on Fox News this week. “The district attorney’s office is about protecting us victims. I feel like … nobody has our back, and it’s sad.”

“It’s very sad where you have criminals over victims,” she continued. “I don’t understand the world we’re living in right now.”
