Lt. Gov. Eric Holcomb is the projected winner of Indiana’s gubernatorial race, where he will replace GOP VP nominee Mike Pence.
Hoosier State vote projections show Indiana turning bright red in 2016. Holcomb defeated Democratic candidate John Gregg, joining GOP Senator-elect Todd Young and Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump as victors in Indiana.
Gregg had been leading in the polls through October, maintaining his edge even after Democratic Senate nominee Evan Bayh’s lead evaporated.
Republicans’ success in Indiana may be a harbinger of things to come in other close races across the Midwest where the GOP is hoping for crucial wins, including in Ohio and Michigan.
