A Hollywood actor and director was spotted Thursday in Ukraine filming a documentary on Russia’s invasion of the country.
Sean Penn, 61, attended a press briefing in the nation’s capital, Kyiv, as part of the project, Vice Studios told Variety. The actor visited Ukraine last November in preparation for his documentary, meeting members of the country’s military, the outlet reported.
“The director specially came to Kyiv to record all the events that are currently happening in Ukraine and to tell the world the truth about Russia’s invasion of our country,” said a statement from Ukraine’s Office of the President, according to a translation. “Sean Penn is among those who support Ukraine in Ukraine today. Our country is grateful to him for such a show of courage and honesty.”

The office also praised Penn for his bravery “that many others have been lacking, in particular some Western politicians.” The statement said the more “true friends” Ukraine has who support the country’s freedom, “the quicker we can stop this heinous invasion by Russia.”
Penn’s venture into Ukraine is not his first time spotlighting real-life events. His documentary Citizen Penn, released in 2020 on Discovery+, covered Penn’s efforts in setting up nonprofit organization Community Organized Relief Effort in response to the Haiti earthquakes of 2010. The documentary sits at a 100% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
