Trump congratulates Macron for his ‘big win’ and looks forward to meeting him

President Trump offered his congratulations Emmanuel Macron for his “big win” Sunday in the French presidential election.

Trump said in a tweet: “I look very much forward to working with him!”

The White House press secretary also put out a statement congratulating Macron and the French people for the “successful” election.

“We congratulate President-elect Macron and the people of France on their successful presidential election,” the statement read. “We look forward to working with the new President and continuing our close cooperation with the French government.”

Trump hasn’t said much about the French election before now, though he did once call it “very interesting.” While he did not endorse Macron’s opponent, Marine Le Pen, he had complimented her stances on immigration. In an interview Trump said that Le Pen is “strongest on borders and she’s the strongest on what’s been going on in France.”

Macron got about 65 percent of the vote, beating out Le Pen, who got about 34.5 percent of the vote, according to the polling.
