STORYLINE:
Thousands of supporters of Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr held a rally in Baghdad on Saturday to protest against the United States’ military campaign in Iraq against the Islamic State (IS) extremist group.
The rally took place after al-Sadr, who fought American troops following the US-led 2003 intervention in Iraq, urged his followers to take to the streets and protest against the “American occupation” of the country.
Maha al-Douri, a former member of the Iraqi Parliament and an al-Sadr supporter, said on Saturday that military aid in Iraq should come from countries other than the “occupation forces”, referring to the US and its allies involved in the operation.
