House Speaker Paul Ryan said he has no plan to drop his support of presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump despite a string of recent comments that some have deemed offensive.
“That is not my plan, I don’t have a plan to do that,” Ryan said when asked if he might un-endorse Trump.
Ryan said he would speak out against Trump’s comments when he disagrees and noted he disagreed at times with Mitt Romney, the GOP presidential nominee who tapped him as his running mate in 2012.
“We are going to disagree on some things,” Ryan said. “What we do agree on is we don’t want another Democrat in the White House, I’ll tell you that.”
Ryan said he couldn’t predict how often Trump would make statements that anger or offend people.
“I don’t know the answer to that question,” Ryan said. “He’s a different kind of candidate. This is a different kind of year. I’m going to be myself and speak up in defense of our principles and our country’s principles. I do believe the last thing we want is a Democrat in the White House like Hillary Clinton.”
Reporters asked Ryan about Trump’s message to GOP leaders to “just please be quiet,” if they disagree with him and Ryan responded, “You can’t make this up sometimes.”
