Protesters behead and pull down Confederate statues in Portsmouth, Virginia

Protesters in Portsmouth, Virginia, beheaded four Confederate statues and pulled one down using a tow rope on Wednesday night as police looked on.

The Virginian-Pilot reports one protester was injured by the falling statue. Demonstrators knelt around the man as medics helped him before police cleared the area.

Protesters spray-painted the Portsmouth Confederate Monument earlier in the day after NAACP President James Boyd and one of his vice presidents, Louie Gibbs, were arrested and charged with trespassing. The two were released a half-hour later on summons.

The monument was covered with “BLM,” as well as the name of George Floyd, who died in police custody last month.

Floyd’s death sparked protests around the world against systemic racism and police brutality.
