Four unattended portable phone chargers found in Trump Tower following bomb scare

Police responded Friday evening to reports of three suspicious packages left outside Trump Tower in Manhattan, New York, where President Trump and his family lived before moving to Washington.

First responders and the bomb squad were spotted at the skyscraper in New York City after 6 p.m. local time Friday.

Two law enforcement officials confirmed to the local NBC affiliate that four unattended portable phone chargers had been found throughout the building. The recharging battery packs are a security concern because they could contain explosives.

A custodian had spotted two unattended chargers and informed security officers at the tower, who then called police.

Following a second search of the premises, police found two additional unattended portable chargers.

Bomb dogs did not alert to explosives in the chargers. Police have not shared if the devices were left behind on purpose or accident.

Fifth Avenue remained closed between East 56th and East 57th streets.

The Secret Service has not issued a statement confirming details of the incident.

Trump is in Bedminster, N.J., with his wife Melania this weekend.

The Transportation Security Administration recently begun screening laptops and handheld electronic devices separately from other personal items when passing through airport security due to the possibility the items could contain explosives.
